This week we have a very special guest mix by 530Techno contributing writer, Redding based DJ and producer, Brien Scott. Been nagging Brien for a studio mix for nearly 2 years now and it does not disappoint. A fluid blend of deep minimal tech, current electro house and indie dance, Podcast Episode 11 is perfect for your Winter weekend.
Brien wrote, performed and produced guitar-driven, psychedelic post-punk before getting turned-on in the late '90s to the potential of the underground dance scene. He now spins electro flavoured indie and proggy tech-house tracks, and experiments in creating original music with computers and guitars. He has an affinity for Finnish vodka.
Brien is one of the 530's up and coming producers for sure and been in the studio a lot lately. He has just completed a new lush, melodic techno track entitled Ickenham Station. Check it out via
http://soundcloud.com/hothouseAlong with being a contributing 530Techno writer he is also a decade long member of the Monterey based production crew Straylight Productions. These cats have been throwing amazing celebrations on the California's beautiful Central Coast since the turn of the century drawing top shelf talent from all over the world.
After a coupla annoying messages from me he gave me the 411...
How long have you lived in the 530 and if you are not from here, what brought you?
I'm a replant. I went to high school up here then escaped to various coasts for a very long time. I've been living in Redding for the last couple of years after a stint in the Bay Area. The sense of isolation here is incredible.
What have you been working on recently?
I've been trying to master the application of hand drums and cowbells, and to do more with less. I'm also working on walking my dog more.
Where and how was the mix recorded?
This is a classic bedroom mix, recorded live using Traktor DJ Studio on a MacBook.
Can you tell us a little about the idea behind the mix?
It's all crazy voodoo. Or maybe a scrapbook. Or a confession. Or a little plastic toy.
Technically, I wanted to mix more musically - to pay attention to the harmonic qualities of the tracks as well as the rhythmic and emotional qualities.
What are you up to next?
I'm gonna smoke hella bowls. Maybe I'll walk my dog.
Which artist or producer's music would you be championing at the moment?
Felix Cartal's upcoming album is gonna rock your socks. I've been all over him for years, since I heard his Britney and Ashlee remixes. He's a heavy house monster. Seriously. The holy triumvirate of local techno superstars, the Abstract Terrorist, Symbio and Oilpanic, are not to be fucked with. These boys rock the party like nobody's business.
